The Basics
First with the basics. Although it isn't completely necessary to
have a computer and Internet access, it will limit your business's
potential. It isn't necessary for you to have the latest, top of
the line computer to run a successful business, therefore, don't
buy a brand new computer if you already own one, we do however recommend
a reliable connection. If you don't already have a computer, we
recommend visiting the Walmart website. If you are looking for a
low cost computer, this should be your first stop. You can find
many good computers systems that are easily affordable. Visiting
the website also allows you to take advantage of Internet only offers
that are not available in the stores.
We also recommend getting a DSL or Cable high speed connection
connection because it is now more affordable than ever, and is an
"always on" connection, which will give you instant access
instead of ordering a second phone line, or missing calls, and the
main benefit will be getting to websites faster. A DSL or cable
connection will allow you to upload images, access your orders,
or send out large newsletters quickly instead of wasting valuable
time on a slow connection, which might cost you more in the long
run. Having these two items in place will allow you to concentrate
on starting your business by having easy and instant access to a
computer and Internet from the comfort of your own home or your
choice of location. Once you decide on a computer and/or ISP (Internet
Service Provider) we can go to step two. If you ever need help on
any of the steps, you can contact us.
Another basic you will want to have, if you don't already, is a
reliable firewall. A firewall is needed to stop computer hackers
from access your computer, protects your identity from being stolen,
and prevents email worms from spamming your address book. Up-to-date
anti-virus software is also a necessity. This is also available
with ZoneAlarm. We recommend purchasing Zone Alarms Security Suite.
ZoneAlarm Security Suite protects against hackers, viruses, worms,
identity theft, security breaches via instant messaging "holes,"
access to offensive Web content, and more—all in one easy-to-use,
yet powerful package. The last thing you want to deal with having
your computer invaded and your files being infected by viruses. This
happened to me once because I did not keep my virus definitions
up to date. It was a nightmare to restore my computer back to working
order. I noticed there was a problem because my computer viewed
web pages very slowly, printed slowly, and when I would do a web
search, some of words had green or red underlines under them. As
far as I could tell it was some sort of pay per click virus which
modified my browser so that if I clicked on any of the underlined
words they would receive a commission. Ever so often weird ads would
pop up on my computer. Avoid this at all costs and get a firewall
and anti-virus software.
